GBIS Portugal Interschool Debate: Fostering Critical Thinking and Leadership

GBIS Portugal Interschool Debate: Fostering Critical Thinking and Leadership

The GBIS Portugal Interschool Debate, held at Nobel Algarve Almancil on Friday, 9th May, brought together pupils from three Globeducate Portugal schools (IPS Cascais, Nobel Algarve Almancil and Nobel Algarve Lagoa) for an exciting and intellectually stimulating event. The debate provided pupils with the opportunity to discuss pressing environmental issues, including the motion: "Should governments invest heavily in renewable energy?"

Debating is a powerful educational tool that enhances critical thinking, confidence, and leadership skills. Pupils must analyse different perspectives, construct well-reasoned arguments, and respond thoughtfully to counterpoints. This experience sharpens their ability to think quickly and articulate their ideas persuasively. Additionally, standing before an audience and defending a position fosters self-assurance, while the teamwork required in debates nurtures leadership and collaboration.

The competition saw pupils placed in mixed groups, encouraging collaboration across the three schools. They utilised the spacious and well-equipped facilities at Nobel Algarve Almancil to engage in structured discussions. Our Year 6 and 7 teachers judged the debates adhering to a strict rubric to ensure fairness and respect throughout the debates, emphasising clarity, reasoning, and engagement.

Michelle Grainger, Deputy Head of Learning in Nobel Algarve Almancil, said: "A key moment from the debate occurred when, through group collaboration, pupils quickly overcame their initial anxiety. They engaged in meaningful discussions, listened to differing perspectives, and formed new friendships as they shared experiences throughout the day. Many expressed sadness at parting ways with their new acquaintances."

Phil Bubb Year 6 teacher, IPS Cascais, said: "It was a fantastic day, the pupils were actively involved throughout the event, and it was a great opportunity for them to collaborate with pupils from other Globeducate schools in Portugal".

Maeve Doherty, Oracy Lead and Year 6 Class Teacher, IPS Cascais, said: "I am so proud of all the pupils, from the planning stages of creating persuasive arguments to standing in front of their peers arguing their points, they demonstrated strong debating skills which will put them in great stead for the future".

Pupils from Nobel Algarve Almancil and Lagoa were full of excitement at having had visitors from Lisbon. Amy Haydu, Year 6, Nobel Algarve Lagoa, said:

“Today, we came from different schools and met as strangers, but we leave as friends. Talking about these topics and debating was so important. We have to work together to protect our planet - because it’s the only one we all share.”

The GBIS Portugal Interschool Debate not only showcased the pupils' debating prowess but also reinforced the importance of environmental awareness. Events such as these empower young minds to become informed, articulate, and proactive global citizens. We hope that the debate will become an annual event and look forward to inviting IPS Cascais and Nobel Algarve Lagoa back to our campus for other events soon.

On this initiative David Jenkins, Head of School in Nobel Algarve Almancil, said:

"It was wonderful to see Globeducate schools in Portugal coming together to showcase their communication and collaboration skills. The idea was to have fun, make new friends, and learn the art of debating. I believe we achieved all three!"
