New and Unique Post-16 Study Opportunities for Students at Nobel Algarve British International School Almancil
Teenagers in the Algarve now have greater opportunity for post-16 study programmes as Nobel Algarve British International School Almancil launches two globally recognised programmes in September 2025.
The school is already a popular choice in the region, offering the National Curriculum for England and IGCSE programme. Now, as it launches its Sixth Form, Nobel Algarve Almancil will offer two study pathways: the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme and the BTEC International Extended Diploma in Sport. These offerings represent a major milestone in the school’s commitment to providing diverse, future-ready pathways for senior students.
The introduction of the IB Diploma Programme (DP) brings a rigorous, academically broad, and internationally respected curriculum to the school for students aged 16 to 19. Known for its emphasis on critical thinking, global citizenship, and independent inquiry, the IBDP prepares students not just for success at leading universities – but for life.
Complementing this academic route, the school will also introduce the BTEC International Extended Diploma in Sport, a dynamic, hands-on qualification that allows students to explore the world of sport through both theory and real-world application. The BTEC programme is designed for learners passionate about sport – whether through performance, coaching, fitness, or understanding the global sporting industry – and is especially valuable for those considering careers in sport or related fields. The qualification is coursework-based rather than examination-focused and carries the equivalent university points as three A-Levels, providing a robust and recognised alternative to traditional academic routes.
Head of School David Jenkins joined Almancil in April 2024 and is an experienced IB teacher, trainer and examiner. He has been working with the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) since 1996. He said:
“Whether students are preparing for university or the workforce, our dual-pathway approach ensures they can follow the route best aligned with their strengths and aspirations. The IB Diploma and BTEC in Sport offer two distinct but equally valuable educational experiences – each challenging, enriching, and relevant to the world students will enter.
Importantly, our curriculum leaders are also experienced in their fields. Yovna Mewasingh was recruited as our IB Coordinator and has extensive IB teaching experience as well as being an IB examiner and a Programme Leader. Georgia Dean has also led a BTEC Sport programme in a UK school and is experienced at assessing and preparing students for this course. It was crucial to appoint experts in their fields to lead these new programmes as we are doing something groundbreaking here for the Algarve and are committed to providing the very best experience for our students.”
Why the IB Diploma Programme?
The IBDP is recognised worldwide for its intellectual rigor and holistic approach to education. Learning is broad, with six subject areas. Students also complete three core components that develop independence, creativity, and community engagement: the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course, the Extended Essay (EE), and the Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) programme.
Subjects Offered at Nobel Algarve Almancil in 2025/26
In its first year, the IBDP at Nobel Algarve Almancil will offer a broad range of subjects. Students may study English A: Language and Literature or pursue a self-taught literature course; choose from French B, Portuguese B, English B, or ab initio Spanish or Mandarin for language acquisition; and explore Business Management, History, or Environmental Systems and Societies in the humanities. Science offerings include Biology, Physics, and again Environmental Systems and Societies. In Mathematics, students can choose between Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches or Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation.
All students will also complete the IB core, which includes TOK, the EE, and CAS – components that ensure graduates are not only academically equipped, but also reflective, socially aware, and engaged learners.
Introducing the BTEC in Sport
The BTEC International Extended Diploma in Sport is a new offering that reflects the school’s commitment to applied learning and student choice. This programme blends practical experience with theory, giving students the opportunity to engage with real-life sporting contexts through coursework, collaborative projects, and hands-on sessions.
The course is ideal for those interested in careers in coaching, fitness, teaching, or sports management, but is equally suited to anyone wishing to understand the impact of sport on society. The BTEC provides a strong foundation in leadership, communication, teamwork, and critical thinking – skills that are in high demand across industries. As a coursework-based qualification equivalent to three A-Levels, it offers a compelling, practical route to further education and employment in the sports sector.
Preparing Students for a Global Future
These new pathways support the school’s vision of preparing students not just for exams, but for meaningful lives beyond the classroom – equipped with the skills, values, and mindset needed to thrive in an ever-evolving world.
Globally Respected and Widely Recognised
The IB Diploma is recognised by over 5,000 universities in more than 100 countries, often offering course credits or advanced placement. The BTEC International Extended Diploma in Sport is equally well-regarded by both universities and employers, especially in sectors such as health, education, and sports business.
