People of Nobel Algarve: Raquel Silva

Raquel Silva has been part of the Nobel Algarve community since 2017. She began her journey as a front office team member and has since grown into a key figure in the school's daily operations. Raquel now plays a vital role by managing the stationery and uniform shop, while also coordinating school events and trips — ensuring everything runs smoothly and efficiently for students, staff, and families alike.

 

Can you describe your role within the school community and how it contributes to student and staff support?

I manage the school’s stationery and uniform shop, supporting students, parents, and staff by ensuring that essential materials and attire are available throughout the year. This role has allowed me to build strong relationships within the school community, particularly with new families who often rely on my guidance during their first days at school. I also coordinate school events and trips—an area where I’ve developed valuable experience in planning, logistics, and communication. From organizing educational outings and cultural events to managing permissions and transport, I take pride in creating safe and enjoyable experiences for our students. These responsibilities allow me to stay connected with students and staff across year levels, and I value being part of a team that supports both the academic and personal growth of our learners. Every event or interaction, big or small, is a chance to contribute to the school’s vibrant and inclusive environment.

 

Where did you grow up, and what was it like there?

I grew up in two completely different countries — South Africa and Portugal. Growing up in South Africa was vibrant and diverse, full of cultural richness, but also marked by challenges that shaped my perspective early on. Later, moving to Portugal brought a different rhythm of life — more peaceful, with a strong sense of community and tradition.

 

What’s a tradition your family had while growing up that you still cherish?

One tradition my family had that I still cherish is gathering around the table for big Sunday lunches. Whether we were in South Africa or Portugal, Sundays were always about family, food, and conversation — no distractions, just quality time. It’s a tradition I still try to keep alive because it brings a sense of connection and grounding.

 

What’s your all-time favourite book, movie, or TV show?

It’s hard to pick just one all-time favourite TV show because I’ve watched so many over the years.

 

What’s a favourite memory from your childhood?

One of my favourite childhood memories is spending the best summer with my grandparents in Portugal.

 

How did you become interested in working in education?

This is my first time working in education, sparked by a combination of personal interest and a recent experience. I’ve always enjoyed being around children, and coming from a different background, this opportunity has given me a fresh perspective. It’s been eye-opening and has inspired me to continue growing and developing in this field.

 

Tell us about your greatest achievement

One of my greatest achievements was organizing an event for Portugal Day, which required a lot of dedication, learning, and overcoming challenges. Through this experience, I learned the importance of perseverance and staying focused on my goals. It also showed me how much I can grow when I push myself outside of my comfort zone. I’m proud of this achievement because it not only had a positive impact on me personally but also influenced and brought together the community around me.

 

What is your steepest learning curve?

My steepest learning curve was when I started working in education for the first time.

 

How do you remain curious?

I remain curious by always being open to learning, especially when I’m in a new environment or doing something for the first time.

 

What motivates you to keep going during challenging times?

I think about the progress I’ve made, the people I’m helping, and how far I’ve come — especially since I’ve taken a new path into education.

 

Who is someone in your life who has had a significant influence on who you are today?

Someone who has had a significant influence on who I am today is my grandmother. She played a big role in my upbringing and taught me the values of patience, kindness, and resilience.

 

What's the best piece of advice you've ever received?

Don’t be afraid to start something new, even if it feels uncomfortable at first.

I’d like the community of Nobel to know that I’m someone who brings positivity, a willingness to learn, and genuine care for others — especially children.

 

What’s something you hope to accomplish in the next five years?

In the next five years, I hope to grow both personally and professionally within the field.
