Years 10 & 11: IGCSE

The International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) is a globally recognised qualification for students in Years 10&11 (ages 14-16). The IGCSE curriculum offers a comprehensive programme that prepares students for further academic pursuits, including the IB Diploma or a vocational pathway such as the BTEC programme, both available at Nobel Algarve Almancil. Students usually take between 6 and 9 subjects, made up of a combination of compulsory and elective subjects. Nobel teaches the IGCSE syllabus that is accredited by Pearson Education.

Choosing subjects

Selecting which subjects to study at IGCSE marks an important moment in a student’s educational career, as the areas of study chosen in Key Stage 4 then go on to inform the subjects studied at IB Diploma and even university.

All pupils at Nobel Algarve Almancil study English Language, Mathematics, Biology and a foreign language as part of their core curriculum. Students are encouraged to also study an additional science and at least one other humanities subject as part of their 4 option subjects.

Subject options include:

  • French language
  • Portuguese language
  • Business studies
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Marine Science
  • Physical Education
  • History
  • Geography
  • Art & Design
  • Design Technology
  • ICT

University expectations

Although university requirements vary around the world, there is an overwhelming expectation that students need to achieve at least six IGCSE qualifications at Grade C or above. This is the case for anyone wishing to apply to Portuguese universities. UK universities will also expect students to have achieved at least a grade C or above in English, Mathematics and Science.

iGCSE Results 2024-25

With an impressive 98% overall pass rate, the IGCSE results 2024-25 reflect the dedication, perseverance, and talent of our students, supported every step of the way by our outstanding teachers.
