Nobel Algarve Lagoa - Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

The Duke of Edinburgh International Award, available from Year 9 onwards, is a prestigious achievement culminating in Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards through successive school years. Founded in the United Kingdom in 1956 by Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, the programme aims to encourage personal development and community involvement among young people.

The award is self-paced throughout the school year and is made up of four different areas of expertise: There are three levels, each requiring increasing amounts of commitment:

  • Bronze – starting at age 14
  • Silver – starting at age 15
  • Gold – starting at age 16

Skills

Developing a personal interest or hobby (e.g., music, cooking, coding)

Physical

Improving fitness through sport or physical activity (e.g., football, dance, gym)

Volunteering

Helping people or the community (e.g., charity work, mentoring, environmental projects)

Expedition

Planning and completing a journey in the outdoors, including an overnight stay (e.g., hiking and camping)

At gold level, there is an additional requirement to take part in a residential course with other participants.
This internationally recognized qualification, highly regarded by employers and universities, enhances students’ skills and experiences. The program not only cultivates personal growth and achievement but also prepares students for future challenges, offering valuable experiences and qualifications for life beyond academia.
