Blue School Day and European Maritime Day: Celebrating Our Oceans and Our Planet

Our school recently marked Blue School Day and European Maritime Day with a vibrant programme of activities designed to inspire students to learn about, appreciate, and protect our oceans. The day reflected our ongoing commitment as both a Blue School and an Eco-School, and  was led by our dedicated Blue School Ambassadors together with teacher Rita Farropo, who worked hard to organise a range of engaging and educational activities for students across the school.

One of the highlights of the celebrations was the launch of the Blue School Anthem, a special project developed under the guidance of Professor Bruno Rodrigues. The anthem captures the spirit of our Blue School journey, reminding us all of the importance of protecting the oceans that sustain life on Earth.

Students also contributed to the creation of a striking mural inspired by the Pedra do Valado coral reef. This colourful artwork serves as both a celebration of marine biodiversity and a visual reminder of the beauty and fragility of underwater ecosystems. Through researching and depicting the reef's rich marine life, students gained a deeper understanding of the importance of conserving these unique habitats for future generations.

Another key feature of the day was the distribution of activity booklets by our Blue School Ambassadors. These booklets provided younger pupils with fun and interactive challenges, games, and learning activities focused on marine conservation. By encouraging students to engage with environmental issues in an age-appropriate and enjoyable way, the ambassadors helped foster curiosity, responsibility, and a sense of stewardship for the natural world.

The activities not only celebrated European Maritime Day but also strengthened our school's wider environmental mission. As a Blue School, we are committed to increasing ocean literacy and helping students understand the crucial role that oceans play in regulating the climate, supporting biodiversity, providing food, and sustaining communities around the world. 

At the same time, our work as an Eco-School reminds us that protecting the oceans is inseparable from protecting the planet as a whole. Pollution, climate change, habitat destruction, and unsustainable consumption affect ecosystems on land and at sea. By promoting sustainable practices, reducing waste, conserving resources, and encouraging environmental responsibility throughout the school community, we are helping students recognise that every action can make a positive difference.

Blue School Day and European Maritime Day provided a wonderful opportunity to celebrate what we have achieved so far while looking ahead to the challenges that remain. The enthusiasm, creativity, and commitment shown by our students demonstrate that the next generation is ready to take action for a more sustainable future.

Together, we will continue to learn, act, and inspire others to protect our oceans, care for our environment, and safeguard our planet for generations to come.
