Eco-School Program overview at Nobel Algarve Lagoa

Over the past decade, our school has proudly maintained its status as an Eco-School, flying the Green Flag as a symbol of our ongoing commitment to sustainability. As the coordinator of the program, I’ve had the privilege of supporting this journey — one that has been shaped by the dedication of students, teachers, staff, and the wider community.

Each year, preparing the application for the Green Flag has been both a challenge and an opportunity. The process involves documenting our environmental actions, evaluating progress, and setting new goals. While I’ve helped guide this work, it has always been a collective effort. The enthusiasm and creativity of our students, in particular, have been the driving force behind many of our initiatives.

From waste reduction campaigns to biodiversity gardens, the projects we’ve developed reflect the values of the Eco-Schools program: learning by doing, involving the whole school, and making a real impact. One of the most rewarding aspects of this role has been seeing how environmental awareness has grown across the school — not just as a subject, but as a way of thinking and acting.

Sustaining the Green Flag for ten consecutive years hasn’t been without its challenges. It requires consistency, reflection, and the ability to adapt to new environmental priorities. Each year brings new themes — from climate change to marine protection — and with them, new learning opportunities. I’ve tried to ensure that our approach remains dynamic and inclusive, always open to new ideas and voices.

What I value most is how the Eco-Schools program has become part of our school’s identity. It’s not just about meeting criteria; it’s about fostering a culture of responsibility, curiosity, and care for the world around us. I’m grateful to all those who have contributed to this journey — especially the students, whose energy and commitment continue to inspire me.

Looking ahead, I hope we can keep building on this foundation, encouraging even more participation and deepening our impact. The Green Flag is not just a recognition of what we’ve done — it’s a reminder of what we can still achieve, together.

Biology and Geology teacher; Eco Schools Coordinator

Mrs. Farropo is a Biology and Geology teacher at Nobel Algarve Lagoa since 2012. She is currently teaching 9th Grade and Secondary School in the National Section. She has been involved in the Eco Schools programme since its implementation at the school in 2017 and for the last four years. She is also the programme coordinator with the responsibility of bringing together the conditions, means and strategies to successfully implement the methodology.
