Ensino Secundário/ Secondary School
In Secondary School (Years 10, 11 and 12), students continue with the core curriculum and add a specialised area of study.
At Nobel Algarve British International School Lagoa students can choose between Science and Technology, Social and Economic Sciences, Visual Arts or Languages and Humanities as their area of focus. In 12° ano, students take the Portuguese national examinations, which are required for entrance into university.
In Secondary School, curricular flexibility allows pupils to build a learning pathway that is better suited to their interests, needs, and future goals. One of the innovative options available at our school is the possibility of subject exchange, whereby pupils can replace an optional subject with another that is more aligned with their profile and aspirations.
This measure encourages greater engagement in learning, enabling pupils to develop specific skills in areas they consider most relevant, whether for pursuing higher education, entering the job market, or enriching their personal development.
Curricular flexibility also includes interdisciplinary projects, collaborative work between subjects, and student-centred methodologies, placing value on autonomy, critical thinking, and the ability to solve real-world problems.
At our school, we believe that schools should adapt to pupils, not the other way around. Flexibility is an opportunity to grow with purpose.

Assessment and reports
We assess progress and achievement using continuous assessment throughout the school year, and we communicate regularly with parents about how their children are doing educationally, their weaknesses and strengths, and their well-being.
In the Portuguese National Curriculum, students are assessed continuously, with formal national examinations taking place only at the end of 4º, 6º, 9º, 11º and 12º Anos. Internal assessments and classroom tests are conducted regularly to monitor students’ progress and support learning.
Reports provide relevant information concerning students’ academic progress. Each report contains attainment and effort grades. Parents are invited to meet their children’s teachers and form teachers to discuss their children's progress throughout the year, and parents also receive regular written reports. Parents can also contact teachers at any time to meet about their child’s progress.
